Abstract
A new method to obtain graft copolymer onto pore walls is presented. Foils of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) were irradiated with heavy ion beams. The irradiated foils were etched to produce nuclear track membranes (NTM) with submicroscopic pores and grafted using the residual active sites produced by the ions. Experimental curves of grafting yield as a function of fluence, with the etching time as a parameter, were obtained. The replica method was used to take the photography of submicroscopic nuclear tracks that show the characteristic of the pores obtained with similar etching times than those used in the grafting processes. Three monomers were grafted: styrene, N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAAm) and acrylic acid (AA). In particular, NIPAAm and AA grafted foils were analysed using Fourier transform infrarred spectroscopy (FTIR).
